Publisher description
This qualitative report examines the experiences of vulnerable young men in
the labour market. Focusing on young men who experienced a period of long-term
unemployment more than five years ago, the report studies the extent to which
they are able to recover from early difficulties and go on to establish
successful careers. It outlines new forms of disadvantage that affect young
workers, highlighting the impact of labour market insecurity on the lives of
young adults, and is one of the few studies to examine the ways in which young
workers remain vulnerable, even in situations of relatively high employment.
Based on in-depth interviews with 32 young men in the West of Scotland, the
report describes the way in which some young men become trapped in the insecure
sectors of the labour market and the extent to which existing policies fail to
effectively address deficiencies in the supply or demand for quality
labour.
