This young adult novel is about two lonely teens who look different than their peers. Larisa Leontievna is a newly arriving immigrant and Izzy Isaacson is crippled with a clubfoot. As they listen to Benny Goodman records, they dream that one day they too can jitterbug with everybody else. When they hear Benny Goodman live at the Palomar Ballroom in 1935, the night he becomes "King of Swing, " Larisa feels America is welcoming her. The music gives Izzy hope that he can one day be like everybody else. President Roosevelt's new program makes surgery possible so that Izzy can walk without crutches. Larisa turns rejection into acceptance by reaching out to others. When they dance together at their senior prom with Benny Goodman playing in their school gym, they know their dreams have come true and a new life together is waiting for them
