I had hoped to have been able to thank him in this preface for all the help he gave me while I was copying the inscriptions at Charlton, but he died on the 7th April last, after a short illness. He was born in Charlton, and loved the old church well. He had a tale to tell of many of the people buried there. As a boy he had been page to Sir William Gosset, who died just 50 years ago. On one occasion I pointed out to him a rusty, overgrown old railed tomb, remarking that at any rate we should get no inscription from that one. His answer surprised me. A young officer lies there, who was thrown from his horse and killed in Charlton Village when I was a boy! A spade, a bucket of water, and a brush revealed the name, Lieut. Chas. Davidson Graham. Died 1835, aged John Wallis will be much missed in Charlton Village.
