Excerpt from Selections From Lesage's Gil Blas: Edited With Introduction and NotesThe aim of the editor in selecting this text has been to give something which might be useful both in the more elementary work and also in literary study, and for that end it has been thought best to let the selections betaken in blocks. The plot which runs through Gil Blas is certainly one of its least important and attractive features. It is not so much the life of Gil Blas himself that we are interested in as it is the manners and customs and real life on every page, and so it has seemed best to give, not a condensation of the whole work, but, with as few omissions as was considered practicable, four distinct portions. The first two are chosen from the first six books of Gil Blas which were published in 1715 and are largely picaresque the last two, treating of the archbishop of Granada and of the duke of Lerma, are from the next three books published in 1724 and show Lesage at his best.
