Publisher description
Excerpt from America at School and at Work The following chapters were written during the spring and summer of 1917, in the course of an educational mission of six months undertaken by the author at the beginning of that year. They are, therefore, the result of impressions taken 'red hot' at the time of his visit, and not the calculated criticisms which might be expected after the interval of a year. The delay in publication has arisen from causes which need not here be dwelt upon: but it may perhaps be mentioned that certain Government-Departments in the autumn of 1917 kindly ex-pressed an interest in the subject-matter with which these chapters deal, and a desire to receive a recent record of the educational and industrial movements in the United States during the past few years.
