James Doss was born at Barking, Essex in 1820 and died at Chaddleworth, Berkshire in 1889. He was a police officer for nearly 40 years, serving as a PC and Sergeant in the Metropolitan Police, as Chief Constable of Saffron Walden Borough Police and finally as a PC in Berkshire Constabulary
